We are pleased that today we are gathered in this fashion to appreciate and recognize sporting and artistic excellence in the province and we are honouring the crème de la crème of Mpumalanga and these are people who have made us proud through their performances. It gives us great pleasure to celebrate winners and performers of high caliber who are zealously advancing our mandate of creating a winning province as we are known for podium finishes be it in sport, arts or recreation. So we have decided as a department that noble deeds and achievements of our sport stars and artists could not go unnoticed and we are commencing with a new era in the province which herald celebrating, nurturing and elevating excellence in the province to new levels.
We are profoundly privileged to be part of the 40th anniversary of the Independence of our neighbours, the Republic of Mozambique. We have always shared cordial relations with the Republic of Mozambique as we were together in the trenches fighting for freedom and an end to colonization in our countries and Africa in general. The role that was played by Mozambique in our own liberation struggle was instrumental in our quest to attain freedom and we owe a great gratitude to Mozambicans who stood by us and made their country to be our second home when we were waging the struggles to defeat apartheid.
There is no better way to keep the legacy of Madiba than keeping the spirit of Ubuntu alive.
It does not cost an arm and a leg to do it. All it needs is our time and nothing else. For 67 years, our icon, Madiba, devoted his time fighting apartheid and promoting peace. Even in retirement, he continued to do his part to bring cheer to those who needed it and to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate, especially children.
Programme Director, we are indeed gratified to address an occasion of this magnitude as Africa Day represents our proudest moment as Africans where we celebrate our beings and selfless service and dedication of our African brothers and sisters to the cause of the development of our continent. It is worthy to reflect and applaud the constant heroic deeds that Africans make worldwide be it on the economy front, politics, religion, sport, music and culture amongst others fields. Therefore, on a day like today, we should all proudly proclaim our Africanness.
Programme Director, we are delighted as Mpumalanga provincial government to take part in festivities of the: We are Africa Fashion Spectacular as part of the Africa Month Programme. We do not have a doubt that we will tonight indeed be exposed to Africa’s finest when it comes to matters of fashion and crafts. As the provincial government, we commit ourselves to continue working together and supporting all our artists so that they could excel in their fields of operation.
We are pleased that we are gathered here in Bethal for a dialogue on the transformation of the Heritage Sector in our province with a special focus on statues, symbols and place names that define our public spaces. Bethal is a strategic area in our province in terms of heritage preservation as we have the cultural precinct that houses the statues of struggle hero and heroine, Gert Sibande and Nokuthula Simelane. The provincial government built the statues to build an inclusive heritage through building monuments and other symbols that honour the heroes and heroines of the struggle that delivered the freedom and democracy we enjoy today.
