Programme Director, we are delighted as Mpumalanga provincial government to take part in festivities of the: We are Africa Fashion Spectacular as part of the Africa Month Programme. We do not have a doubt that we will tonight indeed be exposed to Africa’s finest when it comes to matters of fashion and crafts. As the provincial government, we commit ourselves to continue working together and supporting all our artists so that they could excel in their fields of operation.
We are celebrating Africa Month this year under the theme: “Africa Unite Against Xenophobia for Peace and Friendship from Cape to Cairo”. It therefore becomes prudent for all of us to work together in unison as African brothers and sisters so that we could shape a unified Africa that our forebears envisaged on the 25th of May 1963 when they formed the Organisation of African Unity in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The OAU was replaced by the African Union (AU) which was established on the 26th of May 2001 and officially launched on the 9th of July 2002 here in South Africa. The objectives of the AU are to achieve greater unity and solidarity between African countries and Africans, to promote and defend African common positions on issues of interest to the continent and its people and to promote sustainable development at the economic, social and cultural levels as well as the integration of African economies amongst others.
As the provincial government, we want to see artists using their artistic talents to create economic opportunities for themselves so that they could meaningfully contribute to the economic growth of our country. Africa month is indeed a celebration of creative talent and all that Africa stands for. The time has come for Africa’s renewal to be taken to a higher level by the continent’s highly gifted creatives, designers, poets, writers, intellectuals, musicians, chefs and artists.
We have 13 gifted fashion designers here tonight who will showcase their brilliant work. We also have designers from our very own province who will be showcasing alongside well-known fashion designers from South Africa, Zambia, Nigeria and Ethiopia. We also have work by crafters from around the province on exhibition here tonight and we assure patrons that they will be spoilt for choice.
We appreciate the fact that Minister Nathi Mthethwa has brought this high calibre show to our province and we equally applaud the fact that youth from our province are benefitting from the show.  The South African Fashion Week who is coordinating this show on behalf of the Department of Arts and Culture is mentoring youth from the province in areas of Project Management, Stage and Sound, Lighting Management, Public Relations and a host of other tasks that are required for a fashion show of this magnitude.
May all patrons enjoy the Show.
    I thank You!
