Last year, the team punched above their weight when they obtained position four in Johannesburg and they will be hoping to return to podium in Pretoria. This year’s games will be held from 9 to 13 December.
Team Mpumalanga caused ripples in the world of school sport when they finished fourth at the Summer Games. The hosts, Gauteng won it, followed by KwaZulu Natal in second and Western Cape in third.
Team Mpumalanga collected medals in almost all the 10 sporting codes – basketball, cricket, goalball, gymnastics, rugby 7s, softball, table tennis, football, volleyball and swimming - of the tournament. The championship is opened to all school-going athletes, including Midly Moderate Handicap (MMH) and Learners with Special Educational Needs (LSEN). The team was dominant in swimming, gymnastics, volleyball and football. MMH and LSEN pupils were among the medalists.
“We are confident that the boys and girls from the province will represent us well at the national tournament,” said departmental spokesperson, Sibongile Nkosi.
