MBOMBELA – A three-legged event to honour some of the most celebrated Mpumalanga citizens in the arts will take place in the city later this month.
The Art of Legends will get underway with a weeklong exhibition of the artworks and photographers of Dr Esther Mahlangu and Sam Nzima, respectively. The exhibition will be held at Riverside and Ilanga malls from 24 to 28 September.
The exhibitions will be followed by Night of Legends at Emnotweni Arena on Thursday, September 26 in which the Mpumalanga Provincial Government will honour Nzima (posthumously), Nothembi Mkhwebane, Ray Phiri (posthumously) and Dr Mahlangu.
“The Art of Legends is about celebrating and honouring these artists, who have put the province on the map and also made their marks in their respective fields over the years,” explains the department’s Sibongile Nkosi. The Night of Legends will see Princess Indlovukazi and Karabo Mogane showing the country that the province musical future is in good hands.
Nkosi adds that the Art of Legends will celebrate local people and it will also be used to inspire the youth to go after their dreams so that they can emulate these industry giants. Nzima and Phiri might no longer be with us but their works continue to inspire people the world over.
The Art of Legends will conclude with a Picnic Concert at Nelspruit Botanical Gardens on Saturday, September 28 and it will feature Caiphus Semenya, Tsepo Tshola, Mbongeni Ngema, Stimela and Nothembi Mkhwebane. Entrance is R175 at Computicket and gates open at 12:00.
