Women's Day event to tackle gender based violence

Eradication of gender-based violence, women economic empowerment and promoting a healthy lifestyle will be high on the agenda when the Mpumalanga Provincial Government commemorates Women's Day on Saturday, August 11 at Kwaggafontein Stadium.

Themed, 100 Years of Albertina Sisulu: Woman of Fortitude. Women United In Moving South Africa Forward, the celebration will start with a Health Walk which will be led by Premier Refiloe Mtshweni and Culture, Sport and Recreation MEC, Thandi Shongwe. The Premier, MECs and Mayor will handover social relief items, including furnished houses to the local community.
"Our aim as a provincial government is to impact the lives of women from all walks of life through a variety of programmes that will not only commemorate, celebrate and connect women with the stories of their past but will also open up opportunities for a better future while advancing their course towards socio-economic empowerment and also use the platform to condemn the recent spate of violence against women," says spokesperson for the department, Sibongile Nkosi.

The premier will deliver a keynote address, while Zahara, Bathabile and local artists will provide entertainment.
