Honour Joost by wearing your Boks jersey on Friday

MBOMBELA–Like millions of South Africans, Culture, Sport and Recreation MEC, Norah Mahlangu will don her Springbok jersey on Friday, February 10 to celebrate the life and times of Joost van der Westhuizen.

Westhuizen, a former Springbok captain, died earlier this week after a long battle with motor neuron disease (MND). In his playing days, Westhuizen was a charismatic number nine for both the Blue Bulls and the national side.

“The country has lost a true legend of the game, who made his mark in the sport by helping the country win the 1995 Rugby World Cup in 1995, “ said MEC Mahlangu, adding that the player was part of the squad that used its sporting powers to unite the country.

“We will never forgot the role he played in uniting the country when the Springboks won the World Cup. Together with the late former statesman, Nelson Mandela he used rugby to bring the country closer. Outside the sport, he continued to be a positive influence to the people of South Africa and the world over and played his role in raising awareness about MND,” added the MEC.

She concluded, “I am urging the people of South Africa to wear their Springbok colours on Friday to celebrate the life of a rugby legend.”
