Tribute to Jimmy James Matshiga – A Pillar of isiNdebele Language and Cultural Excellence

The MEC for the Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation, Ms Leah Mabuza joins the Ndebele community and the broader South African cultural fraternity in paying heartfelt tribute to Mr Jimmy James Matshiga — a distinguished actor, educator, author, and tireless isiNdebele language activist.

Jimmy James Matshiga’s contribution to the preservation and advancement of isiNdebele stands as a remarkable testament to a life dedicated to language, heritage, and cultural pride. Mr Matshiga passed away yesterday, 03 March 2026, in Hospital where he was receiving medical treatment.

“We will always remember him for his powerful performances on Ikwekwezi FM, where he was a household name, bringing to life unforgettable characters that resonated deeply with audiences. His portrayal of Gembe in the acclaimed radio drama Osemsamo limphosa emnyango will remain etched in memories of many listeners, reflecting his artistic excellence, authenticity and his ability to connect with the audience” Said MEC Mabuza Beyond broadcasting, Mr Matshiga served with distinction as a former isiNdebele Language Lecturer at the Ndebele College of Education, where he played a pivotal role in teacher development and language standardisation. His academic leadership strengthened linguistic scholarship and ensured that isiNdebele maintained its rightful place within formal education structures.
