The South African Society of Archivists (SASA) in partnership with Mpumalanga Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation and Tshwane University of Technology will be hosting the Annual Archives and Records Management conference at Tshwane University of Technology, Mbombela Campus. The Conference will be held from the 4th to the 7th July 2023. It will be marked under the theme “Information hygiene in archives and records management in the Fourth Industrial Revolution era”. The MEC for Culture, Sport and Recreation Ms Thandi Shongwewill be giving keynote address and will be accompanied by management of the Department and the chairperson of SASA iNkosi Jongisilo Pokwana Ka Menziwa and other dignitaries.

In South Africa, proper management of records is a critical aspect of every organizational business whether public or private as mandated by the National Archives and Records Service Act, no 43 of 1996 as amended and Companies act respectively. Falsification of information is rife across different platforms including those created and kept through social media. The question is whether information managed in the offices of origin and archival repositories is free from this peril. What are the institutions doing to ensure hygiene of the information and records throughout the life cycle? Are there some processes, activities, or functions undertaken to ascertain, prevent, and rectify falsification in records from creation to disposal? Do the records housed in repositories reflect the reality or true story of what happened in the past? What do archives and records management practitioners do to point out some hygiene in the information they receive, manage and archive.
The 2023 conference will bring together academics and practitioners from various universities and industry organisation from both public and private institutions across the world to share information on best practices. Papers on topics that address the theme of the conference, and sub-themes are included in the conference programme. Such papers will be considered for publication in the Journal of South African Society of Archivists which is available on open access, provided the authors submit full papers.
