MPUMALANGA SWIMMERS TO TAKE PART IN SCHOOL SPORT CHAMPIONSHIPS IN DURBAN
MBOMBELA - Following a stellar performance of Mpumalanga athletes, it is now the turn of swimmers to make the province proud on the national stage.
Mpumalanga is sending a team of 60 swimmers to the National School Swimming Championships in Durban, which start on Friday, April 21 and finish on Sunday, April 22.
“We wish our swimmers all the best in the championships. They have what it takes to take top honours at the event,” says Culture, Sport and Recreation MEC, Thandi Shongwe.
Team Mpumalanga is made up of 50 able-bodied and 10 para swimmers, who will be vying for top honours against the likes of KwaZulu Natal, Gauteng, Western Province, Eastern Cape, Free State, Limpopo, North West and Northern Cape in the three-day event at Kings Park Pool. Western Cape, Gauteng and the hosts have the biggest contingent in the gala of 105 swimmers each.
The swimmers are out to do better than the athletes, who held their own at the national championships in Germiston Stadium. The team obtained position five and four in the mainstream and Learners with Special Needs categories, respectively.
“As a province, we are encouraged by the performances of the learners,” concludes the MEC.
