MBOMBELA - With just over a month to go to the National Indigenous Games, Mpumalanga has shown its intention to do well at the tournament.

“We are going for nothing but glory at the national tournament,” says Culture, Sport and Recreation mouthpiece, Setshaba Mphahlele following a successful selection trials that were held at WH de Klerk in eMalahleni recently.

According to Mphahlele, the trials gave coaches and managers enough time to have a look at the players who will bring top honours from the national tournament in Polokwane from 19 to 24 September “The province has assembled a good team and it will do well in Limpopo,” explains Mphahlele.

Mpumalanga will have representation in all the codes, which are: diketo (coordination game), dibeke (running game), khokho (running game), morabaraba (board game), incuva (board game), jukskei (target game), kgati (rope-jumping), intonga (stick fighting) and drie stokies. As per usual, the province is expected to dominate in khokho, kgati, jukskei and morabaraba.

Indigenous Games are aimed at promoting cultural activities that have a particular appeal to vast sectors of the South African community – young and old, black and white. It goes without saying that they are more than a recreational sport as they play a pivotal role in promoting national unity and social cohesion.

“We call on all the people of Mpumalanga to rally behind the team,” concludes Mphahlele.
