Recreation Day, Big Walk to whip Mpumalanga into shape

Culture, Sport and Recreation MEC, Norah Mahlangu-Mabena has called on all people of Mpumalanga to participate at Recreation Day and Big Walk this weekend at Mbombela Stadium.
The Recreation Day, to be held annually on the first Friday of October, aims to encourage the community to participate in recreational activities such as jogging, aerobics, indigenous games, yoga, cycling, dancing among others, while the Big Walk is a five-kilometre fun walk.
Both events will be held at Mbombela Stadium on Friday, 2 October and Sunday, 4 October respectively. The Recreation Day starts at 9:45 and Big Walk at 8:45.
“Government is creating a platform to encourage our people to live a healthy lifestyle and the department is using the Recreation Day and Big Walk to show it doesn’t cost a fortune to exercise,” said Mahlangu-Mabena at the launch of the programmes at Ingwenyamaa Lodge last week.
The MEC said the Recreation Day and Big Walk have a great potential to also act as a unifier just like big sporting events such as football, cricket and rugby. “Sporting and recreational activities have the power to bring South Africans together. We saw it during the 2010 FIFA World Cup and with the current Rugby World Cup. As government, we use such platforms to promote social cohesion and national unity,” she concluded.
